September 19, 2024
Dear Roosevelt Learning Community,
Kent City Schools, Theodore Roosevelt High School, and our law enforcement partners take all threats and safety concerns very seriously. We remain in constant contact with our law enforcement partners. All reports received at our schools are immediately investigated in conjunction with law enforcement according to Kent City Schools policies and procedures.
Press Release Provided by the Kent Police Department: The Kent Police investigated a possible school threat at Kent Roosevelt High School at approximately 9am this morning. A social media post showed an RHS student with a handgun in their waistband. The photo was posted shortly before the school day began, so the school went into lockdown while the potential threat was investigated. The investigation left no reason to suspect the gun was on school grounds, and classes eventually resumed with the student in question removed. Kent Police continued their investigation, ultimately locating the firearm at the student's home. Kent Police will continue their investigation, and work with Kent City Schools to resolve this matter. Lt. Mike Lewis
When a threat or safety concern is presented, administration and local law enforcement are tasked with making decisions about how to respond to keep our students and staff safe. When the threat or safety concern has been addressed internally, there are many emotions we are all going through. We will process the events the best we can in differentiated steps, such as: trying to get back to our regular schedule as soon as possible, releasing students to their families, providing counseling to those who need additional support, etc. At the same time, we understand that once the event has been dealt with, people may need time to process and work through the experience.
As we process this event, please discuss concerns with your student(s), stressing the importance of reporting accurate information to the appropriate authorities. Take this opportunity to talk with your student(s) about the seriousness of making or perpetuating threats and the resulting consequences of engaging in this behavior. Encourage students to use social media in a responsible manner, and to speak with you, a trusted adult at school, or the School Resource Officer (SRO), if they see or hear something of concern. The safety of students and staff is our highest priority.
Sincerely, TRHS Administrative Team
